Speaker: Dr. Brian Shelton

It’s through the influence of people like Dr. Brian Shelton that Toccoa Falls College develops servant leaders, who will impact the world with the love and message of Jesus Christ. In 2010 after spending 10 years as a professor teaching theology, Dr. Shelton accepted the position of vice president for Academic Affairs at Toccoa Falls College. Prior to arriving at TFC, he served as a youth pastor in rural Indiana and worked as a biology researcher for 10 years. Dr. Shelton graduated from Asbury College in Kentucky with a B.S. degree in Biology. He went on to attend Covenant Theological Seminary where he acquired his M.Div. in Biblical Studies. Later, he attended St. Louis University where he earned his Ph.D. in Historical Theology.

Dr. Shelton reflects on his opportunity to teach students at TFC and shares, “I loved teaching theology to our students because it creates a venue for discussing some of life’s greatest questions such as: Who is God? Who am I? What will the answers mean for us both?” Dr. Shelton continued, “The complex and confusing world today has so many options available for young people.” Even now he is very passionate about investing in students’ lives and challenges them to answer questions about God and themselves, while assisting them in making sense of their own journey.

In his vocabulary, the word fun means hiking along the Appalachian Trail, playing basketball, and traveling internationally. He had the opportunity to lead three study abroad trips to Europe with TFC students. Dr. Shelton is great at the electronic challenge games between random passengers on the overnight flights and considers himself to be the King of Catan. He loves reading anything about the early church fathers, which he thinks is quite cool. He claims to like old school music – bands such as the 77s, Lost Dogs, and early U2. However, musicians such as Bruno Mars and Miley Cyrus have been known to “pop up” regularly on his iPhone, thanks to his teenage daughters.

Speaking of children, Dr. Shelton has three daughters and a wonderful wife. His oldest daughter is a cheerleading captain, and although she gave him the cold shoulder on opening night, he still shows up to every game and is her biggest fan.
