BE. inquisitive.

In Matthew 22:37, Jesus included the call to love God with your mind in addition to your heart and soul. The TFC philosophy major was specifically designed to help train you to fulfill this commandment. Our major accomplishes this goal by offering select courses that are designed to foster biblical, critical, and integrative thinking about the big questions of life.

why philosophy?

Upon successful completion of the philosophy major, you will advance in analytical skills to enabling you to flourish in graduate and postgraduate study, in the workplace, and in professional ministry.  Some of our graduates have moved on to attend top colleges and others are working in professional and international ministries.  One graduate currently working with Ravi Zacharias International Ministries remarks,

More than ever, we are in serious need of critical thinkers. Our culture abounds with empty soundbites and shallow conclusions that are as harmful as they are superficial. As a cultural apologist…I am tasked not only with identifying the flaws in these various ideologies, but also of offering the Gospel of Jesus Christ as the only story that can make sense of all of reality. My philosophy degree from Toccoa Falls College has played an invaluable role in helping me to confront some of these unique challenges."

Another graduate presently serving as an Assistant District Attorney writes,

“…philosophy is what prepared me for law school. 90%+ of law school involves reading… and then showing up to class ready to discuss and analyze what we read.”

On average, philosophy majors score at some of the highest graduate entrance-exam levels for law school and business school.[1]

The Wall Street Journal recently reported that business recruiters are looking for candidates with a strong proficiency in problem solving and critical analysis.  Our philosophy program makes the development of these skills a top priority!

In addition, our philosophy courses will prepare you to encounter some of the complexities of contemporary culture. For example, the required course in bioethics explores an ethical spectrum of issues related to matters of life and death. Philosophy of religion invites you to wrestle with various philosophical questions about God’s existence and nature. The “Great Philosophers” courses introduce you to several significant thinkers in the stream of Western thought (from Plato onward). In your final year of study, you will have the opportunity to undertake intensive academic research with your senior thesis. Finally, you will gain practical experience by doing various hands-on philosophy-related assignments.
