Dr. Atkinson joined the Toccoa Falls College faculty in 1989. Before joining the TFC faculty, he served as the Minister of Youth for Red Deer Alliance Church in Red Deer, AB.

He is the author of four books: Handbook of Young Adult Religious Education (Religious Education Press, 1995), Ministry With Youth in Crisis (Religious Education Press, 1997), Teaching Youth With Confidence (Evangelical Training Association, 2001), and The Power of Small Groups in Christian Education (Evangel Publishing House, 2002). He has contributed to the Christian Education Journal, various books about ministering to youth, and magazine articles.

He is a member of the North American Professors of Christian Education.
