Scripture for the Day: Philippians 4

In 2 Corinthians  4:7-8 it says We now have this light shining in our hearts, but we ourselves are like fragile clay jars containing this great treasure. This makes it clear that our great power is from God, not from ourselves. We are pressed on every side by troubles, but we are not crushed. We are perplexed, but not driven to despair. 9 We are hunted down, but never abandoned by God. We get knocked down, but we are not destroyed.  Through suffering, our bodies continue to share in the death of Jesus so that the life of Jesus may also be seen in our bodies.

It seems hard to rejoice in suffering, but I find myself realizing these are the best moments of my spiritual life. Whether a family issue, a hurting relationship, difficult ministry, or internal insecurities, God’s glory is the most evident when I am weak and trusting in His will. Of course I don’t enjoy being at that point of desperation, but there is a kind of freedom in realizing there is nothing more I can do and that a God (whose power conquers the grave!) is fighting on my behalf. When I realize that I am a ‘fragile clay jar containing a great treasure’ with a ‘great power from God and not [my]self’, and that everything I endure is to point to the suffering Christ himself went through on the cross to take away my sin, I am instantly filled with peace.  What greater blessing or witness could we partake in than to ‘share in the death of Jesus so that the life of Jesus may also be seen in our bodies’? I can’t think of any higher honor than to point to Christ’s purpose on the cross than through our own meager suffering.  God has specifically placed you in that situation for a reason, and He desires to use it for His glory!

I am humbled to contain your great treasure within my fragile clay life.  I praise you that your glory can be shown in my life especially when I rejoice in suffering.  May I remember that your great power is within me. May I feel the freedom your resurrection power brings.
