After opening the season with a 100-35 loss at Martin Methodist College (NAIA), the TFC Lady Eagles basketball team notched their first win of the young season with a 69-54 win on Nov. 4 at Johnson University (Tennessee). TFC’s full-court pressure led to an early 11-0 lead. Johnson was able to cut the TFC lead to four late in the first half, but TFC went on a 13-2 run and led 42-27 at halftime and maintained that margin the rest of the game. Rebecca Weatherbee scored 21 points and grabbed 9 rebounds. Freshman Esther Shady led the team in rebounding with 10.
The next day the Lady Eagles were at home against Bryan College (NAIA) and lost 60-52. Seven minutes into the game, TFC was down six when new transfer Quimby Handy went down with a knee injury. The Lady Eagles wobbled a bit and were down 39-24 at halftime. But they made some defensive adjustments and hit some big shots in the second half and cut the lead to as few as four points with two minutes remaining in the game. But Bryan took care of the ball down the stretch and hit their free throws and TFC lost. Amanda Ferrell led the team in scoring with 15 points and added 10 rebounds. Weatherbee scored 13 and grabbed 11 rebounds. Shady had 12 points.
The TFC men’s basketball team got underway with an 80-54 win on the road at Johnson University (Tennessee) on Nov. 4. The Eagles played a zone against Johnson’s all-guard line-up and held them to 21 first half points. Everyone on the TFC roster played and scored in the game. Freshman point guard, Josh Barrett, led the balanced attack with 17 points despite limited playing time due to foul trouble. Andrew McGarvey and freshman Derek Westfall added 16 points each and Johnny Sinclair had 10. Danny Snyder grabbed a team-high 13 rebounds.
