The Lady Eagles hosted Wesleyan College on Thursday night in the final home game of the regular season. TFC had defeated Wesleyan 62-61 in Macon on January 10. In the rematch in Toccoa, the visiting Lady Wolves avenged its earlier loss and defeated the Lady Eagles, 61-57.
Throughout the opening half, the teams fought evenly with 5 ties and 14 lead changes. Neither side was able to gain an advantage larger than TFC’s early 6-2 lead until Wesleyan’s Jasmine Davis and Alyssa Whitford hit back-to-back three pointers to give Wesleyan a 33-26 lead with less than a minute remaining in the first half. Katie Calloway hit a layup with time winding down to send the Lady Eagles to the locker room trailing 33-28.
Wesleyan restored a 7 point lead at 35-28 quickly after the restart. Over the next 6 minutes of action, the Lady Eagles tighten its defense and took a 44-37 lead, its largest lead of the game. After working hard to jump ahead, TFC struggled from the floor, and went 6 minutes without scoring a field goal. While TFC struggled to convert its chances, the Lady Wolves fought back to retake a 51-48 lead with 8:33 remaining. TFC was unable to regain traction and fell to Wesleyan, 61-57.
Jeanelle Arnold (pictured top right) led TFC with 16 points and 9 rebounds. Esther Shady contributed 14 points and 10 rebounds, and Katie Calloway added 9 points and 8 rebounds. Rachel Morris also scored 9 points for the Lady Eagles. Wesleyan’s Jasmine Davis led all scorers with 22 points. Davis also grabbed 10 boards in the win. Alyssa Whitford finished with 13 points, and Myra Patrick added 10.
The Lady Eagles will conclude the regular season at Johnson University (TN) on Saturday. On February 28-March 1, Toccoa Falls will host the south region tournament.
