The TFC Eagles played Trinity Baptist College on Friday in the opening round of the south region tournament in Clearwater, Florida. The third-seeded Eagles entered the match with #2 TBC hoping to play the role of spoiler, but TFC had fallen twice to Trinity Baptist this season. In Toccoa, Trinity topped TFC 3-2 in a thrilling double overtime match. In Jacksonville, Trinity again beat Toccoa Falls; this time by a 3-1 scoreline. TFC exacted its revenge and advanced to the region finals with a 2-1 victory over Trinity Baptist College.
The pressure of the moment took its toll on both teams in the opening minutes as each side struggled to possess the ball with accurate passes and soft touches. TFC won two quick corner kicks but failed to put a shot on frame. Midfielder Erik Garrigo put TFC ahead 1-0 in the 17th minute of play. TFC’s Ben Maxey squared a pass in the box to Garrigo, who struck the ball with his out-step and curled it in the upper corner. Following the opening goal, TFC continued to press for a second. Forward Nate Dority provided the two goal advantage in the 28th minute with a back post finish from a corner kick taken by Mike Howell. Trinity Baptist’s Danial Stone gave TBC their lone goal of the match with a break away finish with 44 seconds remaining in the half.
The tense second half saw both teams earn good looks on frame, but neither side was able to add to the scoreline. With the 2-1 victory, TFC advanced to the tournament final to face hosts Clearwater Christian College at 7:00 PM on Saturday.
