TFC hosted Clearwater Christian College on Friday in the first match up of the season between the two south region rivals. Clearwater entered Friday’s match on a two game win streak, last defeating Bob Jones University 1-0. Contrarily, TFC entered the match on a three game skid. TFC most recently had fallen to Piedmont College 2-1 earlier in the week. In front of a raucous homecoming crowd of approximately 800 fans, Clearwater played the role of spoiler with two early goals to eventually top TFC 3-0.
As some fans were still making their way to their seats, Clearwater won an early corner kick. Cleawater’s Jonathan Moore scored his first of two goals on the night when he pounced on the loose ball in the box and made no mistake about it. Just 10 minutes later the Cougars doubled its lead. A seemingly harmless shot from long range took a major deflection off a TFC defender and redirected into the net for a quick 2-0 lead for CCC.
After halftime, TFC challenged the Cougars but failed to maintain possession that would translate into scoring chances. TFC’s best chance of the night was when forward Stephen Lee found himself behind the Cougars defense but was denied by the Cougars Garrett Hollenbach. Moore would score his second opportunistic goal of the match in 83′ minute as he capitalized on a poor dropped pass from the Eagles defense intended for keeper Elijah Smith.
Both sides placed 5 shots on frame in the match with Clearwater’s Garrett Hollenbach earning 5 saves while TFC’s Elijah Smith had two. TFC (4-8) and Clearwater (4-7-1) will square off again next Friday in Clearwater at 4:30. The game should be streamed live here. TFC will also face Trinity Baptist College on their Florida road trip. The TBC match will be played Saturday at 3:00.
