The men’s soccer team at Toccoa Falls College (1-4) hosted the Bob Jones University Bruins (2-2) on Thursday night. An early goal from the Bruins put the pressure on the Eagles, who were unable to overcome the early deficit, and were topped 5 – 0 in the end.
The Bruins took the opening kickoff straight at the Eagles’ goal with a through ball that split TFC’s defense and put Bruins forward Matt Moore one-on-one with TFC’s Elijah Smith. Moore converted the breakaway for a 1 – 0 lead just 26 seconds into the match. Despite the early deficit, the Eagles settled down and countered with several decent scoring chances of their own. Unfortunately for the home side, TFC was unable to convert any chances while Matt Moore’s second strike in the 27th minute and a Travis Woodham finish just 6 minutes prior to intermission gave the Bruins a 3 – 0 cushion at the half. While the scoreboard showed a large disparity between the sides, the shot count at the half favored BJU by a respectable count of 10-6.
BJU’s Matt Moore would complete his hat trick in the 61′ with a finish from close range. TFC continued to put the Bruins defense under pressure, but settled for too many direct balls as they attempted to push attackers forward. Bob Jones would earn their fifth and final goal in the 86′ with a John Wilson left-footed strike. In the end, the Eagles tallied 12 shots to the Bruins’ 19, but TFC was unable to beat keeper Cam Lawson and the Bruins defense.
Coach Rob Worsley said of the loss, “Hats to Bob Jones tonight. They finished their chances whereas we failed to convert ours. Whenever we get 12 shots in a game, we have to find a way to bury a few in the net.”
TFC will travel to Warren Wilson College for a 4:00 PM kickoff on Friday, September 13. The Eagles will host Huntingdon College and Trinity Baptist College on Wednesday and Friday, respectively. Both home matches will begin at 7:00 PM and will be streamed live.
