The Toccoa Falls Eagles hosted the North Greenville Crusaders (NCAA D2) in a non-conference match up on Thursday night. TFC has never defeated the Crusaders and have been on the short end of back to back 1 – 0 losses to NGU in both the 2011 and 2012 seasons. In the 2013 edition, the visiting Crusaders would waste no time in putting the game out of reach of Toccoa.
NGU, who returned 9 starters from last season, jumped on TFC with two goals in the first 15 minutes of action. TFC would fall behind 5 – 0 in the opening period before junior forward Nathan Dority buried a loose ball via a corner kick just before the halftime whistle.
The Eagles looked to start the second half with newly found momentum, but their efforts to stop the Crusaders attack were derailed just minutes into the second half. NGU extended their lead to 7 – 1 within the first 10 minutes after the restart. TFC’s Stephen Lee closed the margin to 7 – 2, finishing a well-played cross from Mike Howell. The final 25 minutes were mostly one-way action as the Crusaders built the final 9 – 2 scoreline.
With the loss, TFC falls to 1 – 2 and North Greenville improves to 1 – 0 following their first match of the season. The Eagles will face another stiff challenge on Saturday as they host nearby rivals Emmanuel College (NAIA) at 7:00 PM.
