The Toccoa Falls College Eagles (19 – 10) hosted nearby rivals Emmanuel College Lions (18 – 14) in a midweek, out of conference match up on Tuesday, April 2. The top ranked Eagles (NCCAA Div. II) took an early lead over #5 Emmanuel (NCCAA Div. I), but would fall 3 – 4 in 10 innings to the Lions.
The Eagles and the Lions remained scoreless through the first four and a half innings until the Eagles jumped ahead 1 – 0 with a Corey Warner RBI single. The visiting Lions would tie the game with a run of their own in the top of the 5th inning. With the score tied at 1 – 1, Josh Ward and Corey Warner each scored in the bottom of the fifth for a 3 – 1 Eagles lead. TFC’s two run advantage would hold until the Lions scored two unearned runs with two outs in the top of the 7th inning to re-tie the game, 3 – 3. Emmanuel would score the eventual winning run in the top of the 10th inning and retire the Eagles in the bottom of the 10th to steal the 4 – 3 win.
TFC’s starting pitcher Zach Breeden was unfortunate to be given a no-decision with 5 innings, 7 hits, no walks, three strikeouts, and one earned run. Micah Ellington relieved Breeden in the 6th inning and took the loss despite 5 innings, allowed 5 hits, one walk, one strikeout, three runs, and one earned run. Offensively, Corey Warner was 3 – 5 with a run batted in. Josh Ward had two hits in four at-bats, a walk, three stolen bases, and a run scored. Jordan Couillard had a RBI and scored a run for the Eagles, and Josh Hill was 1 – 4 with a run batted in.
The Eagles will travel to NCAA Division II opponent Georgia College on Wednesday before returning home to host Covenant College on Saturday. Saturday’s doubleheader with Covenant will begin at 1:00 and 3:00.
