The TFC baseball team (15 – 7) hosted Reinhardt University (14 – 13) for a doubleheader on Wednesday, March 13. Behind two solid pitching performances, the Eagles swept the doubleheader 1 – 0 and 2 – 1, and took the season series with Reinhardt three games to two.
In his previous start, TFC’s starting pitcher Dylan Charles threw his second career no-hitter in a victory over Clearwater Christian and earned NCCAA Student-Athlete of the Week honors. In game one against Reinhardt, Charles picked up right where he left off and allowed just four hits and no runs. The performance against Reinhardt was Charles’ second straight shutout victory. Charles walked two and struck out five Reinhardt batters in the complete game shutout. The Eagles lone run of the game would come in the fifth inning when TFC’s Jonah Crenshaw walked, stole second, and was driven in by Adam Reynolds for the eventual winning run. Crenshaw’s run would give the Eagles the 1 – 0 win in game one.
In game two, Reinhardt scored first in the top of the fourth inning. Reinhardt’s Jerome Jones singled home Stuart Young for a 1 – 0 lead. Reinhardt’s lead would hold until the bottom of the sixth. TFC’s Zack Warner singled home Josh Ward for the tying run. The game would go into extra innings tied at 1 – 1. With runners on first and second and one out in the bottom of the ninth, Corey Warner ended the game with a walk off single to center that scored shortstop Jordan Couillard from second. Warner’s single gave TFC the 2 – 1 win. Pitchers Justin Key, Micah Ellington, Jacob Martin, and AJ Mussler combined to allow three hits and a lone earned run. Fresham AJ Mussler, TFC’s leader in saves, earned his first career win in two innings of relief. Zack Warner was 2 – 4 with a RBI in game two, and first baseman Ronnie Stewart went 4 – 5 on the day.
TFC will travel to Truett McConnell on March 22 for an away doubleheader. The following day, the two teams will return to TFC for a Saturday doubleheader that will start at 1:00 and 3:00.
