Last week was a difficult week for Toccoa Falls College basketball. Both the TFC men and women played important conference games at home and lost them all. Atlanta Christian College came to Toccoa on Jan 18th. The TFC men played a zone defense against Atlanta’s athletic team and held them to only 28 points in the first half. But, while the Eagles defensive strategy worked, they struggled to score and managed only 22 points in the half. Both teams made adjustments in the second half and produced more offense, but Atlanta produced more. They built the lead to 15 points with 10 minutes left in the game. TFC was able to cut it to as little as six, but never got closer than that and Atlanta won 69-60. Johnny Sutherland led TFC in scoring with 23 points, followed by Nick Droll who had 14 points and 8 rebounds. Danny Snyder grabbed 10 boards for the Eagles and Ryan McGarvey had 5 assists.
The next game was Jan. 21 against Clearwater Christian College. Clearwater came out shooting well, but TFC stayed close and was down only five at halftime, 35-30. Clearwater shot even better in the second half and kept building on the lead and TFC could not find an offensive or defensive answer. Clearwater made 54 percent of their field goals and hit 44 percent of their 3-point attempts, while TFC shot 32 percent from the field and 23 percent from beyond the arc. Clearwater won 81-61. Sutherland had 19 points and McGarvey turned in a nice game with 14 points, 6 rebounds and 7 assists.
The next day, TFC played Florida Christian, who had beaten Atlanta Christian the night before. After a slow start that left them down 10-1 in the first three minutes, the Eagles found their feet and fought back to within five at the half, 40-35. Florida Christian started the second half strong, but TFC was able to slow their momentum and build up some of their own and closed the gap to five points with five minutes remaining. However, Florida Christian kept its composure down the stretch and TFC didn’t take advantage of a few scoring opportunities and lost 80-67. Danny Snyder had a big game inside, scoring 23 points and grabbing 7 rebounds, and Droll and McGarvey had 5 assists each. The Eagles are at home again on Tuesday at 7:00 against Piedmont College and Friday at 7:00 against Trinity College of Florida.
The Lady Eagles suffered a similar fate against Atlanta Christian. They also managed to limit Atlanta’s scoring by playing a zone and were within five at the half, 34-29. In the second half, their defense was even tougher and they gave up only 30 points, but they only managed to score 11 points and lost 64-40. Rebecca Weatherbee and Kaitlyn Antonioli led TFC in scoring with 8 points each, and Amanda Ferrell led the team in rebounding with 9.
Later in the week, against Clearwater, the Lady Eagles had a sluggish start and didn’t score until Clearwater had already built a 10-0 lead. They came back and evened the score, but then fell into a nine-minute scoring drought and trailed 29-17 at the half. In the second half TFC played with more energy and intensity and cut the lead to five, but Clearwater responded and built up the lead and kept it and won the game 52-42. Rebecca Weatherbee scored 17 points. Ferrell had 10 points and 10 rebounds. The Lady Eagles will be home again Tuesday at 5:00 against Tennessee Temple University and then will play on the road until returning home on Feb. 12.
