TFC’s volleyball team played host to the south region tournament on the weekend of October 26-27. The Lady Eagles won two games in the tournament, but were eliminated by the eventual region champions Clearwater Christian College.

The Lady Eagles opened the tournament as the two seed, and defeated Trinity Baptist College from Jacksonville, Florida, in the tournament opener. In the straight-set victory, TFC won 25 – 11, 25 – 16, and 25 – 11. TFC used stellar team defense to defeat TBC, and totaled 45 digs in the three sets. Leading the way defensively for the Lady Eagles was Bethany Slate with 15 digs. Rachel Morris added 10, and Courtney Bechtold and Mary Willis each contributed 7 digs. Slate also led the Lady Eagles with 14 kills.

Before facing an elimination match with Florida Christian College, the Lady Eagles were defeated by Trinity College of Tampa, Florida, in four sets; 15 – 25, 25 – 19, 14 – 25, 13 – 25. Playing for a spot in the semi-finals while also facing elimination, the Lady Eagles defeated Florida Christian College; 25 – 18, 25 – 13, and 25 – 18. Team defense was again the winning formula for TFC. In the three set win, TFC totaled 58 digs. Seniors Bethany Slate and Mary Willis combined for 30 of the team’s digs. Rachel Morris tallied 12 digs, and Courtney Bechtold added 8. Bechtold also had tens kills in the win. Hannah Cleek and Slate combined for 23 kills.

After the quarter-final win over FCC, TFC advanced to the semi-finals to face the nation’s top ranked Clearwater Christian. The visiting Cougars from Clearwater proved to be too much for the Lady Eagles, and defeated the home team in three sets; 10 – 25, 15 – 25, 21 – 25. In her final match, TFC senior Angela Tran had 7 digs. Senior Mary Willis tallied 6 digs in her final match. Willis also tallied an even 100 set assists in the tournament. Senior Bethany Slate compiled 70 digs and 58 kills on the weekend.

TFC’s season ended with a 16-18 record. Bethany Slate was awarded first team All-Region honors, and Mary Willis was named to the second team All-Region. In the 2013 season, TFC will return 9 players from this year’s squad.
