TFC’s volleyball team attended a tri-match in Knoxville, Tennessee, on September 29. Facing Ohio Christian and host Johnson University, the Lady Eagles returned home winless in the tri-match.
The Lady Eagles traveled to the Johnson University tri-match having faced just one N.C.C.A.A. Division II school in their last 8 matches. The grueling competition had taken its toll on the Lady Eagles, as they tried to return to their winning ways.
First facing the Ohio Christian Trailblazers (7-4), the Lady Eagles were downed in five matches; 18 – 25, 25 – 20, 25 – 18, 17 – 25, 4 – 15. After dropping the first set, the Lady Eagles rebounded to win games two and three as they focused on team defense and ensuring they capitalized on their scoring chances. In game two, Angela Tran, Bethany Slate, Rachel Morris, and Courtney Bechtold accounted for three digs each. Slate also had 10 kills in the set. Game three’s win had a similar blueprint as Tran, Slate and Morris tallied 16 of the team’s 18 digs. Setter Mary Willis had 20 total assists in the two wins.
After taking a 2-1 lead, the Lady Eagles would drop the final two sets as the defense struggled to stop the Trailblazers’ attack. In the match, Slate finished with 20 digs, Morris had 17, and Tran and Bechtold contributed with 8 and 7, respectively. Slate also led the way offensively with 25 kills. Britney Eitutis added 9, and Bechtold tallied 8. Mary Willis finished with 40 assists.
The Lady Eagles will host Tennessee Temple on Monday, October 1 at 6:30 pm, and will travel to nearby Cleveland, Georgia, to face Truett-McConnell on October 3 for a 7:00 pm start.
